MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG

Hong Kong: Long Term Study

A meeting of the Hong Kong Committee has now been fixed for

Friday, 8 May at 10a.

The Brief prepared for the Secretary of State last March has

been brought up to date

(a) by deletion of "(which is very much in our own aviation

interests)" in the ninth sentence of paragraph 5 and

substitution of "(which it has been decided, having

regard to other claims on our funds, we cannot pursue

at present)";

(b) by deletion of "(the next Governor should be in office by

the end of the year)" at the end of paragraph 8;

by the deletion of paragraph 18 "An approach to other

departments at ministerial level is under consideration.

Mention of the project in this Ministerial Committee might

help such an approach", and substitution of "The Hong Kong

Government has decided to go ahead with this project with

or without our assistance. In the circumstances and

having regard to other claims on our funds it has been

decided not to press the issue with other departments at

the present time but to hold out to Hong Kong the possi-

bility of assistance at a later stage of the project.
