Mr. Wright, of the Hong Kong Government Office, telephoned
this morning to say that Sir D. Trench would be coming up to London during the morning of Wednesday 9 December, that he would
be having lunch with the Hong Kong Association, and that he
would have the afternoon of that day and the whole of 10 December
for talks with us if there was anything we wished to see him
about.
2.
Sir David and Lady Trench and their daughter are booked to return to Hong Kong by flight QF 758, due to take off from
Heathrow at 1530 hours on Friday 11 December.
3.
Mr. Maddocks has suggested in a letter to Mr. Morgan that we might like to consider sounding Sir D. Trench before he returns to Hong Kong about the suggestion that we should con- sider the early release of five women prisoners who were arrested, charged and convicted during the disturbances of 1967.
Mr. Wilford has seen Mr. Maddocks' letter. Apart from this, I can think of nothing of importance that we could usefully raise with the Governor before he leaves, except perhaps the three criminals who were convicted of murder earlier this year. You will remember the long letter we had from the Governor about crime in Hong Kong. I have submitted separately a suggested reply to that letter but we do not know whether Executive
Council have confirmed the sentences or not.
