Visit of Mr. Philip Haddon-Cave

J-

I had a talk with Mr. Haddon-Cave this morning and told him about the additional appointment made for him by the Treasury (Mr. Truman's letter to me of 7 October). I also told him that the CSD would like to know in advance what he wished to discuss with them (Mr.Steel's letter to Mr. Wilford of 2 October). Mr. Haddon-Cave said that he was not suprised about this; he had asked for the meeting because he was interested in depart- mental structures rather than training questions.

He will get in touch with the CSD direct. I gave him Miss Gunstone's name and telephone number (given to me by somebody in the Treasury in place of the two names included in Mr. Steel's letter). Finally, I agreed with Mr. Haddon-Cave that we would make arrangements for him to see Mr. Royle, Mr. Bottomley, Sir L. Monson, Mr. Wilford, and - at their request Mr. Gallagher, Mr. Wade-Gery and Mr. J. K. Wright for the second time. Would you please now work out a programme for the week beginning Monday 23 November. I also would like to have a further session with Mr. Haddon-Cave towards the end of his time here. We shall also have to consider whether we should try to arrange for him to call on the Secretary of State.

Mr. Haddon-Cave can be contacted either through the Hong Kong Government Office, or at his flat (62 Great Cumberland Place, W.1: telephone number Paddington 3561)
