"In other words, though every one of us, old or young, wants
stability and prosperity to be shared evenly, the younger generation will
become more concerned about what is going on in society, and will become
more interested in public affairs," Mr. Lai said.
"They want to become involved in the business of governing, not
necessarily as civil servants but as outside participants. This is not
a bad thing, and I am all for it."
But a solution capable of taking care both of Hong Kong's peculiar
political situation and the aspirations of the younger generation was the
question, and he cautioned against losing the "sense of balance" in
considering it.
