Female Confrontation Prisoners
18/11
You will have seen from paragraph 2 of my letter
of 13 November to John Denson that the Chinese Chargé
d'Affairs told me firmly that the release of the two
further sick prisoners was not enough to secure the
release of Johnston. According to Ma a further
gesture on our part is required.
2. You will recall that during our most memorable
afternoon at Stanley Gaol the Commissioner of Prisons
volunteered that he thought he would have no difficulty
recommending
in/ the release of some
in th
seven or eight women
confrontation prisoners. I presume that this was
based solely on some spécial consideration for their
recall
sex. I seem to recall that he said that all had
behaved very well in prison.
3. We said at the time that we should like to
concentrate for the moment on sick prisoners but that
if that did not do the trick we should then like to
consider whether something could be arranged with the
women.
