Return route from Hong Kong to London

I left Hong Kong on 17 April for Peking spending a day in

Canton en route where I was able to visit the Fair. I reached

Peking late on the evening of 18 April and stayed there till the

early morning of 23 April when I left by train for Ulan Bator arriving

the following day. I had 2 days there leaving for Moscow early ·

on 27 April. I travelled by air via Irkutsk and Omsk arriving the

same afternoon and left for London on the afternoon of 29 April.

My last visits to Peking, Ulan Bator and Moscow were in 1966, 1964

and 1965 respectively.

Persons met at each stop

In Peking I had talks with the Acting Heads of the West

European and Protocol Departments of the H.F.A. The former and the

latter's deputy came to dinner at the Chargé's house. I was also

received by the Vice Minister responsible for European affairs, Lo

Kuci-po, with whom I had an hour's talk. I also had talks with

several heads of diplomatic missions including those of France

Denmark, Holland, Finland and the Soviet Union.

*

In Ulan Bator I had more than an hours talk with the Vice

Minister for Foreign Affairs as well as being entertained to lunch

by him at which much business was also discussed. All the heads of

diplomatic missions with whom we are in relations (except the Cuban)

attended a cocktail party given by the Chargé, as did a very good

selection of important Mongolians,
