Geography
The land area of Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, the
Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Hong Kong Island, the
Kowloon Peninsula and three other islands (Stonecutters Island,
Green Island and Ap Lei Chau Island) have full Crown Colony status.
The New Territories, which comprise the rural areas lying immediately:
to the north of Kowloon on the Chinese mainland, together with some
230 minor islands, were leased to Great Britain in 1898 for a
period of 99 years.
The total land area of Hong Kong is 400 square miles of which
the New Territories constitute 365 square miles.
Population
Estimates put the total population of Hong Kong at 4,035,000
of which approximately one-fifth is located in the New Territories.
External Physical Communications
Hong Kong is an important communications centre in the Far
East with a modern port and major international airport.
Constitutional Position
In accordance with the powers vested in him by the Letters
Patent and Royal Instructions, the Governor administers the Colony
assisted by an Executive Council and a Legislative Council.
The power to legislate rests with the Governor "by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council". The Crown, however
reserves the right of disallowance and the power to legislate by
Order in Council for the peace, order and good government of the
Colony.
