Geography

The land area of Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island,

The Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Hong Kong Island,

the Kowloon Peninsual and three other islands (Stonecutters

Island, Green Island and Ap Lei Chau Island) have full Crown

Colony status. The New Territories, which comprise the rural

arcas lying immediately to the north of Kowloon on the Chinese

mainland, together with some 230 minor islands, were leased

by China to Great Britain in 1898 for a period of 99 years.

The total land aron of Hong Kong is 400 square miles

of which the New Territories constitute 365 square miles. Pozulation Estimates put the total population of Hong Kong

at 4,035,000 or which approximately one-fifth is located in

the New Territories.

External Physical Communications

An important communications centre in the Far East with

a modern port and major international airport.

Constitutional Position

In accordance with the powers vested in him by the Letters

Patent and Royal Instructions, the Governor administers the

Colony assisted by an Executive Council and a Legislative

Council.

The Executive Council consists of 5 ex-Officio, 1 Official
