There has not been much increase in enquiries yet. Singapore High Commission expect more when the effects of the Employment Restriction Act become clearer.

We have ourselves received very few more enquiries than usual. Again I suppose this is because the tough effects of the Commonwealth Immigrants Act are well-known.

Types of Application
Most of the people enquiring about immigration are professional people, doctors, lawyers etc. For this reason they stand a reasonably good diance of being accepted in most of the countries in which they are interested. They are of course predominently Chinese and reasonably well to do. There is naturally little chance of getting out for the poorer man who cannot even pay his fare. For this reason it seems unlikely that the numbers of people leaving Malaysia in these circumstances are going to be very significant. However the money and skills which they can take with them could have some marginal effect on the Malaysian economy.
