Malaysian Applications for Immigration
Since the May disturbances there has been evidence of a significant rise in the number of enquiries by Malaysians about the possibility of immigration to various countries. On the whole the enquiries are directed mainly to Commonwealth countries. The following are some details:
a) Canada
There have been a very large number of enquiries since 13 May. Most of these are from Chinese; a good many Chinese of course already have relations in Canada particularly on the west coast.
b) New Zealand
The rate of enquiry has risen from an average of two per week to five plus. Again most enquirers are Chinese.
c)
Australia
There has been a very substantial increase. Chinese from the Kuala Lumpur area.

Ceylon
The
The Ceylonese High Commission have had a flood of enquiries. Most of these are from people of Ceylone se origin. Both Malaysian citizens and non-citizens but some Chinese have also applied. Ceylonese are relatively generous in allowing entry to people of Ceylonese origing but they naturally want to control the rate of flow as much as possible.

India

There has not been much increase in enquiries, presumably because the strict Indian regulations about entry are fairly well-known. However I should expect that following the recent incidents last weekend, when Indians were involved, that the Indian High Commission may find a change in this pattern.
