IMMIGRATION (CON ROL AND OFFENCES) (AMENDMENT) BILL 1969

Preparation for the control of Commonwealth immigration moved a

stage forward today with publication in the Gazette of the Immigration

(Control and Offences) (Amendment) Bill 1969.

The Bill will enable the Director of Immigration to extend to

Commonwealth citizens the controls which he at present exercises over the

entry of aliens by means of a visa system.

A Government spokesman stressed today it was not the intention

to require the possession of visas by tourists, visitors and those who

came here on business trips..

Only those who wished to enter for employment, residence or

oducation would require visas.

The Colonial Secretary will move the second reading of the Bill

at a meeting of the Legislative Council on August 13, with the remaining

stages scheduled for the subsequent meeting of the Council on August 27.

"It is expected that the date for the start of the controls will

be announced shortly after that," the spokesman said.
