of one day, expenditure per head would probably average about $5 a head and would include the provision of a midday meal. These payments, therefore, take a slightly different form from those arising from the employment of university students at a wage as was done by several departments last summer. We did not take advantage of the provisions of the Government scheme partly because it would have created difficulties for us in fields which it did not cover e.g. the use of secondary school students, but also because we have found no difficulty in obtaining the services of students of various kinds for our activities and often this service has been the nore useful because it was voluntary and unpaid.

I have mentioned a figure of $50,000 above, but this is nothing more than a rough extension of an estimate which we prepared at the beginning of August this year of what we might
be able to spend over a period of about three months on this kind of thing. I would not wish to ask for supplementary provision in this financial year but would suggest that new provision should be included in our estimates for the year 1969/70, either directly or by early supplementary provision in the new financial year.
