He is well known in the non-legal community, partly because of his knighthood and his position as Senior Puisne Judge ; and partly because of a forceful if slightly erratic personality, a generous hospitality, and very considerable charm of manner when he wishes to exercise it. His wife also has a strong personality and a generous nature, combined however with a lack of tact on occasions. They have a wide range of friends in Jockey Club and business circles, more particularly, arising from his keen interest in racing. He has also taken a prominent part in bodies such as the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Squash Association: and in general he has a warm, but not always entirely well-judged, sympathy for the underdog.

The next candidate, Scholes, is far less of a public figure, being of a somewhat reticent and withdrawn temperament, although he enjoys the support of a wife of outstanding competence and ability and a family life which is a model to all and into which they are generous in drawing many of their judicial colleagues and a very representative body of friends from the community, where they are well-liked. But whilst steady, sound and reliable, although slow, he does not have the temperament, personality or stature which would make him a suitable candidate.
