I am writing to you about the Award of the prefix "Royal" to the Hong Kong Police Force.

The Prime Minister announced this Award in the House of Commons on 17th April 1969. The first official announcement in Hong Kong was made in a Gazette Extraordinary dated 24th April 1969.

The Commissioner of Police has asked for formal notification of the following so that the Force Historial Records can be correctly kept:

(i) The manner in which the Queen's approval was

signified.

(ii) The effective date upon which the title of

the Force was changed.

The second question is of considerable personal interest in the Royal Hong Kong Police Force because there was a change of Commissioner on 19th April, that is two days after the Prime Minister's announcement, and five days before the official notification in Hong Kong. It is clear to me from reading the file here that it was hoped that the Award would be made before the departure of the outgoing Commissioner.

I would be grateful for a quick reply as this matter has been awaiting my arrival for an answer.
