B

As regards the proposed appointment

of a member of the Royal Family as honorary "Commandant General", we would hope that which ever Royal personage was concerned would find it possible to pay an occasional (if only a very occasional) visit to the Colony in the context of the appointment. You will be aware, from the correspondence concerning the possibility of a Royal Visit to the Colony last year, that there are good grounds for believing that a visit by Her Majesty the Queen or His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh to Hong Kong, will

not be practicable in the foreseeable

future.

For this reason we would not

propose to approach either Her Majesty or His Royal Highness in connection with this

appointment,

If, however, the appointment

a member of the Royal Family of such a person meets with Her Majesty's

in proneple approval, we have had in mind to approach

it

Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra,

anth that

since it is felt that/ her considerable

Hong Kong associations, Her Royal Highness

would be an appropriate, as well as a popular

choice for appointment as "Commandant

General."

Perhaps you would be willing to

unishes

ascertain informally Her Majesty's views as regards

on the above proposals and let us know

whether they would be likely to receive

Flag F.

approval.
