Traffic Branch

The twin cities of Victoria and Kowloon suffer, like any modern city in the world, from a growing traffic problem. In the past 19 years the number of vehicles in the Colony has boomed from 9,266 to 92,291 and the number of driving licences issued has increased from 11,290 to 186,803.

To complicate matters the phenomenal growth of the population has brought a serious pedestrian problem and a greater risk of traffic accidents. For this reason road safety educa- tion is an important feature of the Traffic Branch's work.

Parking is another major problem and to help cope with this several multi-storey car parks have been built and parking meters are in operation in most of the urban areas.

The Traffic Branch has an Establishment of 8 Gazetted Officers, 59 Inspectors, 4 Staff Sergeants, 36 Sergeants, 76 Corporals and 481 Constables, assisted by 113 civilian officers. It has 123 motorcycles, 17 motor scooters, 14 patrol cars and 12 other heavy vehicles.

An officer posted to the Traffic Branch will be given experience in all sections-Accident Investigation, Prosecutions, Zone Enforcement, Vehicle Removal, Public Transport and Road Safety.

And if he can't drive, he'll be taught.

Marine Police

The beat of the Marine Police Officer, cover- ing sparsely inhabited islands and picturesque bays, is a direct contrast to the crowded city

area.
