Conditions
The Hong Kong Police Force has an estab- lishment of 11,140 all ranks, including 430 women police. There are 1,064 officers about half of them Chinese.
Young men join the Force as Probationary Inspectors.
The qualifications for entry are:-
A University Matriculation Certificate
or:
General Certificate of Education with five subjects, two at Advanced Level, or: General Certificate of Education with seven subjects at Ordinary Level, or: Having held a Commission in the Armed Services or having been an Inspector in a Colonial Police Force for one year or more and also possessing a General Certificate of Education with five or more subjects at Ordinary Level,
or:
Educational qualifications recognized by the Hong Kong Government as being equivalent to the above.
A Probationary Inspector enters at a sal of £981.15.0 a year rising by 13 annual crements to £1,761.7.6. There is an efficiency bar after £1,390.2.6, a year. University graduates enter at a higher initial salary of £1,266.7.6. In addition to salary, a pensionable expatriate allowance of £214.10.0 a year is payable.
An Inspector is appointed on probation for three years, during which time he undergoes training and is expected to pass several profes- sional examinations.
To qualify for promotion to the rank of Senior Inspector (at a salary of £1,848 a year, rising by annual increments to £2,281.2.6) an inspector must serve a total of seven years in the Colony, and pass the relevant profes- sional examinations.
Senior Inspectors who have served in that rank for three or more years and who have passed further professional examinations, qual- ify for promotion to Assistant Superintendent (salary £2,615.5.0 rising to £3,192.15.0).
Promotions, however, depend not only on ability, but on vacancies in the establishment.
