Hong Kong and Kowloon Licensed Multi-Article Hawker

Society (H.K.K.L.M.A.H.S.)

The H.K.K.L.M.A.H.S. was formed in October, 1958,

with office premises at 359, Reclamation Street, Kowloon and

was registered with the Registrar of Societies on the 13th

April, 1959, The objectives as set out in the constitution

of the Society are:-

cultivation of friendship amongst members;

solution of business difficulties in the spirit

of three mutuals, i.e. love, understanding and

help;

(c) relief for members in case of illness, accident

mediation in disputes between members and the

authorities;

legal advice and assistance for maintaining

business interests of members;

undertaking welfare enterprises for members and

their families and promotion of proper cultural and

recreational activities.

The Society was undoubtedly communist orientated

from its inception, indeed its inauguration ceremony was accorded considerable publicity in the communist newspapers. However, in its first years its growth was slow and it was not until 1967 that it emerged as an important target of

security interest. During the violent phase of confron-

tation, when the Society had an estimated membership of some 1,500 persons, it openly attempted to enlist the support of

hawkers in the communist sponsored food strikes. In line

with the communist policy of 'winning over the masses' during 1968 and 1969 the Society has set about increasing its
