Clement IU Man Pok

Clement Iu Man Pok (1202/2429/0590), a native of Chiu
Chau District, Kwang Tung Province, was born in Hong Kong on
30th August, 1942. He holds Hong Kong Identity Card No.A758447
issued on 20th January, 1965. He resided in Ping Chau, New
Territories, during his childhood. He has been known to voice
radical views as early as his secondary education. He matri-
culated at Queen's College, Hong Kong in 1962, and graduated
with a B.Sc. (Gen.) in 1966 from Hong Kong University. At Uni-
versity he showed contempt for the Government and during a Forum
on 'Hong Kong's Future' on 10th November, 1967, speaking from
the floor, blamed Government for social discontent, the distur-
bances and the uncertainty regarding the future of the Colony.
After graduation he worked with both Rediffusion Ltd. and Radio
Hong Kong for a few months but resigned over what he termed as
a "disagreement on matters of policy with a few senior running
dogs". He claims that in order to be successful in Hong Kong one must either be a rich businessman or an aggressive personality
in the political field and boasts that he is taking the latter
road.

During the student agitation for reforms at the Hong
Kong University in early 1969, he worked closely with Vincent
Shepherd stirring up dissent. On 8th March, 1969, at another
forum at the Hong Kong University he advocated violence to gain
social reforms and as an illustration pointed out that after the disturbances of 1967, "Government adopted a milder policy towards
local residents. 19
Il was one of the 18 signatories to the letter to various newspapers in U.K. in May, 1969, calling for consti-
tutional reforms.

On 2nd July, 1969, during an annual dinner of the Public
Transport Section of the U.N.A.H.K., IU strongly criticised
Government policy on the issue of 9-seater van licences and the
