Mr. Roy Hattersley, the Minister of Defence for Administration,
is planning to visit the Far East from the 27th December to
11th January to study matters connected with the future of the Gurkhas, the garrison in Hong Kong including accommodation problems, and the
Far East rundown. As you may remember, this visit was previously arranged to take place during November/December but had to be postponed owing to pressure of business.
Mr. Hattersley plans to visit Singapore between 29th December and 2nd January, Kuala Lumpur 2nd-3rd January, Hong Kong 4th-7th January and Nepal 8th-10th January. These dates are still subject to minor adjustment but are broadly accurate.
I would be grateful if you would seek the Foreign Secretary's approval for this visit. I am copying this letter to Andrews (No.10), Warren (Chief Whip's Office) and Robertson (Cabinet Office).
