HONG KONG'S DEFENCE CONTRIBUTION

H.E. The Governor's Broadcast Talk

The following in the full text of H.B. the Governor, Sir David

Trench's broadcast talk on Hong Kong's defence contribution over all

radio and televizion services tonight (Tuesday) :

"As you know, whenever we are faced with any situation which is

of deep concern to us all, I like to come to these studios myself to

explain what is happening. · Tonight, I want to tell you about the defence

contribution and the arrangements which have been arrived at as a result

of the negotiations which went on here during the Secretary of State's

recent visit.

"First, let me tell you something of the background. You have all,

no doubt, read about the economic difficulties which the United Kingdon

is having, and of the severe measures which the Government there have

taken to maintain the value of the pound sterling measures which have

already led to higher taxation, a sharp increase in unemployment and

many other difficulties for United Kingdom residents.

ww

The United Kingdom

Government's determination to preserve the pound is a decision which

closely affects us also, since the Hong Kong dollar is associated with the

pound, and the United Kingdom is the second biggest buyer of our goods.
