2.
Finding an explanation of the vacancies is complicated by
the attendance of several thousand Wang Tau Hom children at
primary schools elsewhere and by the occupation of many places
in the estate schools by children from neighbouring districts.
3. The number of Wang Tau Hom children of primary school age not attending school was estimated at 1,500 in May 1968. The
detailed survey now being carried out should help to indicate
to what extent this is a factor.
4. The vacancy figures reflect the attraction of free places
and low fees in Government and subsidised schools. If the
results of the current survey indicate a need for more of such
places, remedial measures will at once be taken.
5.
It is the Hong Kong Government's aim to provide by 1971
free or aided places in Government and subsidized primary schools
for all children who seek them.
6. The standard school fees in Government and aided schools at
present range from HK$ 40 to HKS 10 a year, depending on the locality of the school. It is proposed to reduce them next year
to the range HK 20 to HKS 10 a year.
