Primary education

Today's policy is to provide a place (at public expense) for every child wanting one by the school year 1970-71. This has meant fair numbers of new schools and extension of grants in aid to a variety of přivate schools already in existence. Present figures indicate that the target is likely to be met.

Primary education is stultified by the demands of the Secondary School Entrance Examination. This is a half-day academic test in English, Chinese and Arithmetic, which is the gateway to the Government and aided schools, where fees are heavily subsidized. The result of the test is that teachers and students alike concentrate on the three subjects of the Examination. There are four government secondary technical schools for boys and one for girls. These are as academic in approach as the grammar schools and their students aspire to University education in non-technical subjects.

There is, in addition, a very small number of technical schools administered, by Church bodies. The Aberdeen Technical School (Roman Catholic) is among the more genuine and successful.
