Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter HKK 6/548/3 of 16 January to Mr. Hannam in Hong Kong about buses. It was in fact he as much as anyone who expressed concern to us. We are sending out someone to Hong Kong who will begin by contacting the Trade Commission, and have sent a telegram to Hannam accordingly.
If in fact there turns out to be fire under this smoke, we shall be very grateful for anything the Foreign and Commonwealth Office can do to help us preserve our position in Hong Kong, for the reasons which I explained to you on the telephone.
