U.S. Importa of Textiles
You will be interested to know that a report in the Daily News Record on the 10th March quotes a usually well informed source as saying that Stans, the Secretary for Commerce, would be coming to Europe in April to discuss general trade problems, and that Mr. Stanley Nehmer, the Under-Secretary of Commerce for Resources, would be coming along with him.
This is not, of course, Mr.Nehmer's official position, but what interested me about the report was the statement that the Hong Kong garment manufacturers were in favour of U.S. quotas being imposed on all textiles because this would have assured then a position in the U.S. market which is already of considerable proportions. This confirms our own view of Hong Kong's attitude towards import restrictions and if we are to hold the line against the American demands I think we need to ensure that Hong Kong does not depart from it.
