Mr. G. N. Smith (European Economic Integration Dept.)
This confirms our telephone conversation of 15 November in which I told you that as a result of Hong Kong's telegram No. 2179 asking for the question of textile import restrictions imposed by the Republic of Ireland to be discussed
t the forthcoming meeting of the Anglo Irish Economic Committee, we wanted this item put down on the Agenda. I hope that we shall be in time for this and that the Irish will agree that they have been given reasonable warning.
2. There will clearly not be time for this subject to be discussed in great technical detail and our intention is only to raise it in general terms in the hope that the Irish will thereby be persuaded to reconsider their previous reaction to Hong Kong's representations. Hong Kong has promised a short brief by saving despatch and if you think that this is suitable a member of this
de rtment will be prepared to speak to that briefing to the committee.
