I have been following the correspondence

between yourself and our Commercial Section in

Algeria with interest, and am now writing to

express agreement with the views expressed in

in this

Relton's letter of 7th January, 1969.

The suggestion of using as an argument

the fact that Algeria enjoys a favourable

with the UK.

Sterling trade balance is unlikely to meet

approval in that part of the world, as

other countries in North Africa have protested

that they have unfavourable Sterling trade

with tous, and feel that we should do something about it balances. A general protest, however, would

certainly do no harm at all, and the Board of

Trade have no objection, although they see

little chance of Algeria altering her tariff

rates against Hong Kong. They have pointed out

although

that Algeria is, de facto, a member of GATT, and

a protest along GATT lines is unlikely to meet

a favourable response.
