Canadian/Japanese Negotiations on Man-Made Fibre

Textiles.

Kawasaki of the Japanese Embassy in London tells

the Board of Trade that the Canadians have asked the

Japanese for restraints on polyester/cotton woven

fabrics, polyester long staple fabrics, polyester/cotton

sheets and pillowcases and all shirts of man-made fibre.

As a package deal they offered liberalisation of certain

cotton outer garments, cotton fabrics and one or two

other miscellaneous items.

Japanese negotiators have rejected this package,

making it clear that they are strongly opposed in

principle to restrictions on additional man-made fibre

goods, a proposition which was not in their view covered

by agenda for the meeting. Canadians are keeping up the

pressure, but Japanese are not apparently relaxing their

opposition.
