2. The first reports the outcome of Mr Trezise' talks in Tokyo, with the hint that the United States side were "less opposed than previous reports indicated" to the idea of a multilateral approach under GATT auspices to the problem of curbing imports of wool and synthetic textiles, though U.S. officials are quoted as having said, if they went into any further talks, they ruled out negotiating selectively. There would be no compromise on this! Quite, but It is also clear from the reports that the Japanese are beginning to push the idea of multilateral talks "if they are to study injury to the United States textile industry", the implication being that Japan would be prepared to negotiate quotas if the GATT found that the United States industry had been "injured". This gives nothing away.
