EXTRACT from Ma. Hermann's letter to Hong Kong of 22 January, 1963

5.

The following are the main points made in the report (not necessarily in the order in which they appeared):

(a) The growing consumer preference for man-made fibres has had several effects on the organisation end the technology of the textile industry. The involvement of the big chemical firms has brought heavy new investment, and there has been a tendency for large firms increasingly to morge ană dorinate the market. This, together with an ever-increasing rate of clunge in products, has tended to injure tho smaller producers.

(b) The increasing popularity of blends has reant that not only industries based on man-made fibres but also some of those using natural fibres have tenefitted, while other sectors have been disrupted.

(c) U.S. production of all textiles "has enjoyed unparalleled growth,” It increased faster in the 1960's, when imports wore heavy, than in the 50's, when they were not. There are certain exocptions to the general rise in output, but these are mostly due to changes in fashion or technology or both.
