Hong Kong Department
17 September, 1969
At long last I can report some progress on the matter raised in correspondence ending with your letter ECON.4/5401/69 of 26 April, i.e. the supply of economic and political informa- tion to Hong Kong from certain Embassies and High Commissions.
With a few reservations there is general inter-departmental agreement that posts should be asked to send you general reports on political and economic developments which may be of help to you in the conduct of your commercial relations. It is considered, however, that the letter asking them to do so should issue from this Office; it is felt that if your request came from the FCO it would carry more authority. We are working on a draft which will take account of points made by some departments here and as soon as this is agreed for issue I will send you a copy.
A. F. Maddocks, Es.. Colonial Secretariat, HONG KONG.
