Further to my letter of 10 July, Tran has now been in touch with mo again, having in tho intorin discuzeed the lionglong quenvion et como” longth with di Martino. Di Martino had said that he "onpected" thut so would formally raise et next week's mcoting the question of tho Community's attitude towards the extension of the preference achome to dogondert territorios; that he would have to give on evasive raply in plenary session; but that he would then bo able to ruise the

vas pomnt by "expocted" was "hoped", since it would bo much. loca easy for di Martino to bring up the dependent territorios, and thus the Hong Kong question with the E.E.C. member states if we were not pressing the mattor.

Di Martino had also looked into Tran's ideas for a Hong Kong solution and had agreed, in principle, to try them out on the B.3.C. member states; he would also be prepared to discuss them with us.

Finally, Tran said that di Martino was most anxious to have some indication of our attitude to two different hypothetical cituations

On paragraph 1 and 2 above, I said that I could give no guarantee that we would be willing to fall in with the tactical suggcutions put forward but that I would pass them on. On paragraph 3 I referred Tran to our statesente at the time of the UNCTAD neoting in Dolhi and cuccosted that di Martino might like to bring those points up inform ally in Faris, although it might well be that wo would not wish to say anything about our possible reactions to purely hypothetical qituations
