What he would like to see to offset the proposed new legislation was a statutory rest day for men, so that they need not work 7 days a week if they did not wish to. This would not mean that they should not work 7 days a week if they so wished. The rest day might be expressed in terms of 4 days a month rather than one a week. In short, he would regard the proposal with sympathy provided there were proper safeguards and it could be dressed up not to tarnish the Hong Kong image which had, over the past years, been improving. He undertook to discuss the matter with the Governor and the Commissioner of Labour.
3. Dr. Chung said that what was required was not further legislation but means of making the labour force aware of existing laws.
4. Mr. P.Y. Tang said that he supported Dr. Chung. On night work for women, he had two papers which he proposed to send to Lord Shepherd.
5. Sir Albert Rodrigues next raised the question of an extension of the term of office of Sir David Trench.
It was he said, the unanimous opinion of UMELCO that the Governor's tour should be extended by at least a further year. 6. Lord Shepherd said that he had expressed his appreciation of Sir David in a public speech the other day. It was his view, on record in London, that the appointment of Governor of Hong Kong was one of the most important posts Britain had to fill; and it was, therefore, essential that the next incumbent should be someone of the same stature as Sir David. Such a man would be sought from within both the Colonial and Diplomatic Service fields. The need to look for a successor at this stage was necessary because obviously Sir David could not stay on indefinitely. Nevertheless he took the point made by Sir Albert Rodrigues and undertook to look at it sympathetically.
7. Mr. Wang said that the Chinese community would like to see Sir David stay on for a little while longer. succeeded, it should be by some one with experience of Hong Kong.
