Detainees

The last detainee was released on 12 May, 1969.

Emergency (Principal) Regulations

2. Regulation 31 of the Emergency (Principal) Regulations,

which conferred the power of detention, was discontinued on

20 June, 1969, together with a number of other Regulations.

There are now only six of these Regulations remaining in

force. These will be discontinued as soon as practicable.

Emergency (Deportation and Detention) Regulations

3. These Regulations have been in force since 1956. They

apply only to aliens held pending deportation and they are

required to meet a continuing need in Hong Kong because of

the difficulty in many cases in arranging deportations to the

Chinese Peoples' Republic. No one is detained under these

Regulations at the present time.

Convicted Confrontation Prisoners

4. There are approximately 250 prisoners still serving

sentences in respect of offences committed during the

disturbances in 1967. Of these, approximately 130 are long
