Dear Wilsm
1
In our telegram No. 589 of 24 July we reported that the N.C.N.A. had visited the nine newsworkers in Stanley Prison without incident that day. The visit the next day to the two female prisoners at Laichikok also passed off without incident.
2.
As Robin McLaren left for Peking on 24 July we sent Gordon Barrass, one of our language students, to meet the N.C.N.A. officials at the prisons. The N.C.N.A. accepted this arrangement without any fuss. We described Barrass as a member of the Diplomatic Service who would be standing in for McLaren during his absence.
3.
So far, the N.C.N.A. have not bothered to ring me up and complain about brutality and bad conditions in the prisons.
