Working Party for the purpose of considering and making recommendations in these matters. He also put forward for consideration as an interim measure, replacing the current two-scale system with a scale of brief fees of $300 for 1 day cases, $500 for 2 day cases and $750 for cases lasting more than 2 days.
I announced the terms of this interim proposal at the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Association held on September 29, 1967 and this was rejected out of hand by members. The Bar Committee agrees that it should have been rejected and this view was communicated to the Chief Justice by letter dated November 15, 1967. This letter is reproduced as Appendix "E”.
A letter dated December 9, 1967 was received from the Chief Justice. This is reproduced as Appendix "F". The Bar Committee considered that this letter did not bring us closer together apart from minor variations to the former interim scale. A number of points raised in it was replied to by myself in a letter dated December 21, 1967. This letter which is reproduced as Appendix "G", is in effect an amplification of my letter of November 15, 1967.
The main points made by the Bar Committee are as follows:-
(a) that the Bar Committee sees no merit in the suggestion of the proposed Working Partly par- ticularly in view of the delay which it would involve;
(b)
that the proposed Working Party is heavily weighted against the Bar;
(c) that the only issue raised is the payment of fees
to counsel in criminal legally aided cases;
