My saving despatch No. 973 of 29th July 1968
Communist Prisoners
In the despatch under reference I reported on the work of a committee set up to determine what appropriate assistance could be offered individual confrontation prisoners on discharge, in the form, for example, of family assistance, assistance in obtaining employment or assistance towards re-integration into society.
2.
Prior to their release the cases of all such prisoners discharged between September and December were reviewed by the committee, as were the cases of those due for release in January and February 1969. The attitude of all but a very small minority of these prisoners has been the same as that which I reported to you on 29th July.
3.
Nevertheless, I feel that it is worthwhile continuing with the work of this committee and its associated working group as there has been the isolated case where our assistance has been accepted and there may be more. Furthermore, this indication of our sincerity in wanting to assist may prove beneficial in the long run.
4.
The number of prisoners due for release in the period January to June 1969 is as follows:-
