Among the 30 women compatriots unreasonably detained at Laichikok almost every one of them suffer from various kinds of illness. Gastric ailments and gynaecological disorders are the most common symptoms. The serious cases among them are those of

(3) The patriotic journalists and other compatriots in the prisons have suffered for 8 months of long confinement in their cells as well as illtreatment, but up to now incidents involving insults and assault against them by the prison warders still occur. The latter deliberately manufacture incidents and provocations against them. More recently there is a case of one compatriot being assaulted when he was asking for medical care. an extremely savage incident and is intolerable. Prison many patriotic youths in their early teens are not only forced to do heavy difficult labour which is only suitable to a grown up man, but they are often being manhandled and subjected to insults. This is a kind of damage and torture seldom to be seen in the world, and their health at the very time of their growth is seriously injured.
(4) In the face of the coming winter our compatriots in the prisons are still wearing thin clothing and at night they are only supplied with a thin and worn out blanket which is of course extremely inadequate. Last winter, many auffered from illnesses 1 because of cold and serious frost bite was not uncommon. There-
fore, it is of a dire necessity that they should have enough winter clothing and bedding this winter so that they would not suffer any more from cold this year.
(5) We hold that our patriotic journalists and compatriots who have been unreasonably imprisoned in the prisons and in the V.R.C. are all innocent. Most of the patriotic journalists were assaulted and arrested when they were carrying out normal reporting duties. Some of them were even kidnapped at their homes in the thick of the night. Framed-up charges were put against them and they were thrown into dark prison cells and illtreated. One of them was even sentenced to imprisonment for as long as five years.
