If this is mentioned, it can be stated that this is not

separate or solitary confinement. In all such cases the detainees continued to enjoy normal privileges and exercised with

other detainees. None of the single cells is now occupied.

7. Approximately 1500 persons were sentenced to terms of imprisonment on conviction for offences in connection with the

disturbances in Hong Kong during 1967.

8. Fifty four persons were detained under Emergency Regulations because of their activities during the disturbances.

9. There will remain 350 prisoners in custody at the end of December who are serving sentences as the result of convictions for offences connected with last year's disturbances in the

Colony.

Regulations.

Reasons for conviction or detention

11. All those prisoners convicted on relatively minor charges have

now been released after serving their sentences. The majority of

convicted prisoners now in prison are serving sentences of two years imprisonment or more for violent crimes or equally serious

offences.

Those in detention were implicated in the planning and organisation of various confrontation activities including

intimidation and bomb incidents.

Continued Powers of Detention

The power of detention under the Emergency (Principal) Regulations will not be retained for longer than the security situation requires.
