You will be receiving from another source notification of a private visit that Mr. Julian Amery is to pay to the Far East in November. I attach a copy of his itinerary. You will note that he is to visit Hong Kong twice, between 6 - 8 November and
26
28 November. I understand that he will, on both occasions,
be staying with Harold Lee,
to the Office yesterday for a briefing session with James Murray and myself, and we spent about twenty minutes talking about Hong Kong. We discussed the usual things and there is no need for me to recount what passed. But I think I should mention that he asked particularly for the name of the Head of Special Branch, obviously intending to make some contact with him. In this connection you ought to know (and, I suggest, Slevin) that Mr. Amery hopes to "succeed" to the parliamentary seat of Sir William Teeling in Brighton and is apparently taking over Sir William's role as spokesman for the Taiwan lobby in Westminster. We believe that his trip is being financed by the Taiwan authorities (as they financed Sir William Teeling's regular visits to that part of the world). The major part of his time is to be spent in Taiwan.
You probably met Mr. Amery when you were in the Pacific and
he was a Colonial Office Minister with responsibilities in that area. I am sure it would be appreciated if you could arrange to see him
during his stay.
His Excellency
Mr. M. D. I. Gass, CMG.,
Acting Governor,
Hong Kong.
