Notes for Guidance and Conditions Applicable to
the Parliamentary Visit to the Services in the Far East
1.
Medical Requirements
September
1969
The World Health Organisation specifies certain minimum requirements for travellers, but changes in them are liable to occur, usually without warning.
To minimise the risk of inconvenience and delay to the party it is suggested that members accept the rather more comprehensive Royal Air Force recommendations.
These are that members should be in possession of a valid international certificate of vaccination against smallpox; these are valid for a period of three years from the date of a revaccina- tion or from the date of inspection of a successful primary vaccination. Members ought also to be in possession of a valid international certificate of vaccination against cholera; these become valid six days after vaccination and remain valid for a period of six months thereafter. Members are advised to have any necessary vaccination completed at least 14 days before the intended date of departure, to provide time for the vaccination to become valid and to permit any post vaccination reaction to subside.
Members who require vaccination can have one free at the R.A.F. Headquarters Unit Medical Section at 133 High Holborn, on a weekday afternoon at 2 p.m., but to avoid delay it would be advisable to telephone 01-242-3451, ask for "Innoculation Centre", and make an appointment prior to going.
2*
Baggage
Each Member has an overall baggage allowance of 80 lbs. Of this allowance, up to 9 lbs. (which it is recommended should include toilet necessities and also sleeping attire to allow for any unscheduled night stop) may be taken into the aircraft cabin for use during the journey. The balance of up to 71 lbs. should be packed and adequately labelled with the owner's name: this baggage will be carried direct from the train to the aircraft hold and not normally unloaded until the final destination is reached.
3.
Aerosol containers, compressed gas refills (Butane, Propane, etc.) and inflammable liquids may not be carried or packed in baggage. Transistor radio sets
may not be taken into the aircraft cabin, but should be packed carefully in the "hold baggage", with the battery disconnected and packed separately. Cameras may be carried in the cabin, but must not be used in R.A.F. aircraft or on R.A.F. airfields.
Dress
Weather conditions in the Far East are likely to be hot and humid and it is strongly recommended that lightweight clothing should be taken. For informal day wear light-coloured, long tropical trousers, white shirt and a tie may be worn: for semi- formal wear a lightweight lounge suit would be suitable. All
