£800,000 towards a total recurrent expenditure of £1,400,000.
24. The University has faculties of Arts, science, medicine and
engineering and architecture. The total enrolment is 2283 students
including 51 language students at the Institute of Oriental Studies,
57 undertaking education diploma and certificate courses and
26 undertaking social study courses. There are 752 women students.
Most of the undergraduates are Hong Kong Chinese, but many other
nationalities are represented particularly from South East Asia.
25. The Chinese University of Hong Kong was inaugurated in 1963 as a
federal university in which the principal language of instruction is
Chinese. It has its origin in three post-secondary colleges
New Asia, Chung Chi and United College. Dr. Li Choh-ming,
Professor of Business Administration at the University of California
at Berkeley, in the first Vice-Chancellor. The university has at present
arts, science and commerce and social sciences. In
three faculties:
October, 1966 the total enrolment was 1928.
26. An extensive site for the university has been reserved near
Sha Tin in the New Territories adjoining the present site of
Chung Chi College. The capital costs of building and equipping a fully
residential university of 1800 students has been estimated at about
£41 m. and the recurrent costs at about £600,000 per annum. In August,
1965 a grant of £250,000 was made available to the university from the
C.D. & W. Higher Education allocation. The new university has as yet
few endowments or funds. Apart from tuition fees, which are comparatively
low, grants from the Hong Kong Government provide the main source of
income and though private benefactions will no doubt meet part of the
capital costs, it is clear that the Hong Kong Government will also have
to meet a major share of these.
27. A University Grants Committee on British lines has been set up to
advise the Hong Kong Government on the size and distribution of financial
assistance to the two Universities. (Mr. Herries is the Chairman).
