20. How does the control affect businessmen and self-employed persons?
Businessmen who enter the United Kingdom as visitors will be free to transact business during their visits.
You will need a Ministry of Labour voucher (paragraphs 13–18) if you intend to take any paid employment in the United Kingdom, but not if you are self-employed; nor if you are doing business for yourself or your firm; nor if you are a genuine partner in an established business, that is if you take a share of the profits and are h aid a fixed salary or commission. People in these cate- gories will be admitted if they satisfy the Immigration Officer that they have sufficient capital or resources to make a living and that they are not likely to seek paid employment or to become a charge on public funds. Anyone who has any doubts at all about whether he can produce satisfactory evidence of his proposed business activities would be well advised to apply for an entry certificate (see paragraph 12).
PERSONS OF INDEPENDENT MEANS
21. What about people of independent means?
A Commonwealth citizen is entitled to admission if he can show that he can support himself and his dependants in the United Kingdom without taking a job. If he wishes to settle, he will be allowed to do so if he will have available in the United Kingdom sufficient funds for the foreseeable future and not merely for a year or two. A person claiming the benefit of this paragraph should carry a bank statement or statement of pension entitlement or of other disposable assets to satisfy the Immigration Officer; alternatively, he may apply for an entry certificate (see paragraph 12) before starting on his journey.
22. Does the last answer mean that I may retire on pension to the United Kingdom?
Yes: if your pension is sufficient to support you and your depen- dants.
23. May I come for private medical treatment if I am prepared to pay for it?
Yes: but the Immigration Officer must enquire whether you can
