EMPLOYMENT AND THE VOUCHER SCHEME
13. May I, as a Commonwealth citizen, come to the United Kingdom* to work?
If your main reason for coming is to work for an empl you must obtain a voucher from the British Ministry of Labour before coming. This applies also to professional people coming for employment, but not to businessmen or self-employed persons (see paragraph 20). Paragraph 14 explains the voucher scheme; paragraph 15 lists the categories of people who may come for employment without vouchers, and paragraph 19 deals with apprentices and trainees.
14. Vouchers
Applications for vouchers are placed in two categories; in the first (category A) are placed applications made by an employer in this country who has a specific job to offer to a named Common- wealth citizen, and in the second (category B) applications made by Commonwealth citizens who possess certain special qualifi- cations or skills.
Vouchers are issued by the Ministry of Labour at a controlled rate determined from time to time by the Government. Appli- cations in category B can be considered from people with the following qualifications or skills:
(a) doctors, dentists and trained nurses;
(b) teachers who are eligible for the status of qualified teacher in the United
Kingdom.
(c) graduates in science or technology who have had at least two years'
experience in suitable employment since graduation; and
(d) non-graduates with certain professional qualifications who have had at
least two years' experience in suitable employment since qualifying.
