6. CLEANLINESS. Every registráble workplace must be kept clean. In particular, accumulations of dirt and refuse must be removed daily from floors and benches, the floor of every workroom must be cleaned at least once a week, and all inside walls, partitions, and ceilings must (a) be washed with hot water and soap every 14 months if oil painted or varnished or (b) be limewashed once a year.

OVERCROWDING. Registrable workplaces must not be over- crowed. Each workroom must provide at least 250 cubic feet of space for every person employed. A notice must be posted in each workroom specifying the number of persons allowed to be employed in it.

8. VENTILATION. Adequate ventilation of workrooms must be secured by the circulation of fresh air. Where dust or fumes likely to be injurious or offensive or any substantial quantity of dust is given off, all practicable measures must be taken to protect the workers against inhaling dust or fumes and, where practicable, localised exhaust ventilation must be provided and maintained.

9. LIGHTING. There must be sufficient and suitable lighting in every part of a registrable workplace in which persons are working or passing.

10. DRAINAGE OF FLOORS. Adequate means for draining the floor must be provided where wet processes are carried on.

11. SANITARY ACCOMMODATION. sanitary conveniences, separate for each sex, must be provided.

* 12. RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES AND IRRADIATING APPA- RATUS. The written permission of the Commissioner must be obtained before any work or process involving the use of radioactive substances or irradiating apparatus is carried out in any industrial undertaking. The Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Radiation) Special Regulations, 1957, prescribe the detailed precautions to be observed.

SAFETY

13. FENCING. Every part of the transmission machinery and every dangerous part of other machinery must be securely fenced unless in such a position or of such construction as to be safe to every person in the work- place as if it were securely fenced.

14. Every fly-wheel, pulley, and exposed wheel must be securely fenced and every set screw and bolt must be cut off or countersunk.
