I am sorry that you have had no substantive reply to your letter of 18th May about labour conditions in Hong Kong.
The Commonwealth Secretary has asked me to say that, since my acknowledgment was sent to you, the question has been raised on several occasions in the House and you will no doubt have noted the answer given by the Minister of State, Mrs. Judith lart, on 27th June, in which she announced that we have been discussing with the Governor legislation providing for a phased reduction in the hours of work over a specific period to 48 a week for all women and young persons employed in industry, with adjustments to permissible overtime.
The Commonwealth Secretary hopes therefore that it will not be long before we are able to announce positive proposals for this long-awaited improvement in the hours of work of women and young persons.
