(S) My telegram 1182: Hong Kong Chinese in Britain.
We think that it may be worth ensuring that any sizeable Hong Kong Chinese communities in other countries too are aware of the true situation in the Colony.
Unfortunately we have no means of discovering from local resources [sic] where these communities are. Obviously they exist in San Francisco, Vancouver, and New York but there may also be substantial communities in Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney and Holland and possibly elsewhere, We should be grateful for any information which you may have or which Her Majesty's Missions in these places may be able to obtain from local sources about the size of the community, its influence, its organisations, which newspapers are popular, and the predominant dialect. We appreciate that this will present something of a problem but would be grateful for whatever information is obtainable.
