at the end of the period which the Home Office has allowed him to stay here usually one year but sometimes two. The Home Office frequently agrees to an extension of the permit. According to all the information I can gather there has never been any trouble about the repatriation of an alien Chinese who came from Hong Kong it seems quite likely that some at least save up the money for their fare themselves, others remain long enough with an employer to qualify for a free fare and others may receive part of the fare from each of different people for whom they have worked.

I must say I think that it would not be irrelevant to point out that all employers of aliens in Britain have to guarantee repatriation when first engage the alien and that most of such employers pay the fare to Britain even though the law of the country of origin may not require it. Nevertheless, many aliens from Europe and elsewhere break their contracts virtually with impunity and these Chinese are not peculiar in this way.
