I am replying to your letter of 28 October to George Thomas with which you enclosed a letter from Mrs. Olive Lewis,
In my letter to you of 26 September I explained the attitude of the Hong Kong Government towards the local communist press and I cannot add anything to what I have already told you on this particular subject.
Mrs. Lewis' son clearly takes a somewhat jaundiced view of my recent visit to Hong Kong. But I am bound to say that his comments are neither objective nor helpful. In fact the visit was a most exhausting one and my programme (including those particular activities mentioned by Mrs. Lewis which were only a few items in a crowded programme) enabled me to meet a very large number of people from a wide cross-section of the community and to seek their opinions,
I do not think you will expect me to comment on the last sentence of Mrs. Lewis' letter. I am bound to point out, however, that the situation in Hong Kong is extremely delicate and I think it should be appreciated that the authorities there have dealt with the events of the past six months with commendable efficiency and restraint.
I am returning the enclosures to your letter.
