PRIORITY HONG KONG TO COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (D.T.D.)

Telno 1776

28 November 1967

CONFIDENTIAL

Addressed to Commonwealth Office telegram No.1776 of 28 November. Repeated for information to Peking.

१०

My immediately preceding telegram 1775,

The main pro-Communist papers on 26 November issued a joint statement by 14 Patriotic News Organizations' strongly protesting

against court decision of 25 November criticising judgment

with costs against 'Wen Wei Pao' for libel against

a government servant, W.W. Olivier. The statement says that 'The H.K. British Fascists' are 'preparing to carry out a new persecution attempting to stop the propagation of the thoughts of Mao' and 'seriously warns the H.K. British not to touch' the paper or they will meet 'escalated counter attacks'.

2. A Wen Wia Pao editorial of the same day says that "the Hong Kong British dare not announce the figures for damages" in the case; but the paper 'will not pay even a cent' 'the British should themselves apologise and pay compensati on to the paper and compatriots; and they should be careful when playing with fire'.

F.O. please pass Priority Peking as my telegram 635.

Sir D. Trench

[Repetition to Peking referred for departmental decision]
